Just minutes after birth, an adorable baby elephant struggles to stand, wobbling as it attempts its first steps. The tiny calf’s determination shines as it repeatedly tries to find its balance, refusing to give up.
Captured in a heartwarming video by wildlife photographer Grant Atkinson in Northern Botswana, the moments show the mother elephant gently using her trunk to support the calf.
Each time the young elephant stands, it manages to balance briefly before toppling over, undeterred by its tumbles.
Describing the encounter, Atkinson said, “We came across this mother who had just given birth. The little one was struggling to take its first steps.”
He noted the mother’s instinctive care, “She kept throwing dust, maybe to cover up the afterbirth and encouraged her calf to stand.”
After a few attempts, the baby elephant finally managed to stand up, only to stumble once more, its journey of first steps capturing the touching bond between mother and calf.
