As the smallest member of the group decided it didn’t want to continue, the adult elephants continued on their way, seemingly unfazed by the display of childish defiance.
When the baby realized it might be left behind, it sprang into action, racing after the herd to catch up.
Daphne Sheldrick from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust notes that such tantrums are quite typical among elephants.
In a blog post, she explains that elephants share many similarities with humans, including a comparable lifespan of about seventy years and developmental milestones that mirror our own. For instance, a baby elephant reaches adulthood around the age of twenty.
Sheldrick also points out that elephants possess various human-like traits and emotions. They have strong family bonds, experience grief, and exhibit various feelings, from happiness to jealousy.
Like people, each elephant has a distinct personality, capable of displaying a wide array of emotions, including mood swings and competitive behaviors.
