In a delightful scene, Cartoon, a 58-year-old Asian elephant, found the ideal way to scratch her itch—by rubbing her body against a tree trunk.
Captured in a heartwarming video, Cartoon enthusiastically scratched off thick layers of mud from her arms and legs, giving her head a thorough rub against a branch.

Fiona Hardie took the footage at the Samui Elephant Sanctuary in Koh Samui, Southern Thailand.
Cartoon starts by lifting her front left leg to scratch under her armpit, then slides her body along the tree to reach her back leg.

She continues by scratching behind her right ear, all while appearing to enjoy every moment, her mouth hanging open in contentment.
Moving toward the camera, she rubs her head on a branch while scratching her back leg.
Originally from Australia but now based in Hong Kong, Fiona reflected on the experience: “Besides feeling pure joy, I can’t help but think about what Cartoon must be feeling.

I truly believe elephants are aware of their surroundings and situations. It’s wonderful that she can just live like an elephant, as she’s meant to.”
Cartoon was rescued from a life of giving rides to tourists and is now living her retirement in comfort at the sanctuary, where Asian elephants can live up to 80 years.
Fiona, who runs a Facebook page called Elephant Stories with Fiona, which is dedicated to raising awareness about elephants as sentient beings, added: “I love this video because it shows the beauty of their natural behavior. Every elephant has its own story, and sharing these moments helps us appreciate these remarkable animals even more.”
