Two elephants in northern Thailand took advantage of a roadside opportunity to indulge in sugar cane when their transport stopped at a busy junction.
Sensing the sweet scent of sugar cane in a nearby lorry, the elephants wasted no time. They stretched out their trunks and began helping themselves to the crops, much to the surprise of onlookers.
Sunisa Champangern, who captured the amusing scene on camera, said, “It was funny to see the elephants reaching out for a snack.
I’ve seen elephants transported before, but this was pure coincidence that they stopped next to a truck full of food.”
The two elephants appeared to have the same idea, simultaneously extending their trunks to grab the sugar cane from the adjacent vehicle, which was transporting the crop from a farm.
“I imagine the driver of that lorry will have some explaining to do about the missing crops,” Sunisa added, noting that the spectacle was entertaining to watch.
Other drivers on the road looked on in amazement as the massive animals struggled to tug the sugar cane from the truck.
When the traffic light finally turned green, the elephants managed to sneak a few more pieces of cane on board, ensuring they had a treat for the journey ahead.
Thailand is home to an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 elephants, with about half living in the wild across national parks and the rest in domestic care.
