A wild bull elephant caused a stir in Guwahati, a city in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, when it wandered into busy streets, attracting large crowds of onlookers before being tranquilized, according to officials.
In this latest case, a male elephant from a nearby wildlife reserve entered the city on Tuesday, traveling down the main road.
The elephant reached the central areas of Ganeshguri and Bhangagarh, where it bumped into a few vehicles, though no significant damage was reported. Forest and police officials closely followed the elephant, maintaining a safe distance.
The elephant’s unexpected visit caused major traffic congestion, as many people stopped their vehicles to capture photos of the giant animal, which is believed to weigh several tonnes and be around 11 years old.
“I initially thought it was someone’s pet elephant,” said resident Avantika Bora. “Later, I found out it was a wild elephant. What surprised me most was that it didn’t harm anyone,” Bora told AFP.
Assam’s chief forest official, A. M. Singh, explained the challenges faced during the operation. “It was difficult to tranquilize the elephant due to the heavy traffic and the excitement from onlookers. But we were careful not to agitate the elephant, which helped prevent damage.”
The elephant was finally tranquilized around 10:30 p.m. and transported to the Assam State Zoo. By the next morning, it had been safely released into the Amsang Wildlife Sanctuary near Guwahati, confirmed zoo official Tejas Mariswamy.
