In Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, a determined elephant found an unusual way to soothe an annoying itch in a spot it couldn’t quite reach.
Instead of stretching its trunk or attempting to use its tusks, the elephant came up with an inventive solution: crouching down to scratch against a large termite mound.
The curious scene, captured by photographer Usha Harish, 36, showcases the elephant’s clever approach to finding relief.
Although a termite mound might not be the most comfortable or risk-free scratching post, the elephant was fortunate to avoid any ant bites while it rubbed against the earthy mound.
Harish, photographing elephants near an Amboseli swamp, described the experience as completely unexpected.
“They were unplanned shots,” Harish explained. “A group of elephants was returning to the bushes after spending the day drinking and dusting off. They paused about 120 feet from our vehicle, and I noticed the female elephant scratching her bottom.”
Another female joined, briefly attempting to share the mound for a scratch before one moved aside to give the other space.
“It was both amusing and endearing to see such large animals using a termite mound this way,” Harish added. “I’ve captured many funny moments of animals, but this one was a real highlight. I hope to witness something like it again.”
This rare sight offered a glimpse of the lighter side of wildlife, showing that even the largest animals can have everyday struggles and clever solutions.
